Jim is a professional storyteller. His life’s journey has included graduating from Ole Miss, serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army where he commanded an artillery battery, he sold computers for IBM in the years when most people didn’t even know what computers were, formed his own computer software consulting firm which he ran for twenty years before retiring, piloted his own airplane, authored two successful books, recorded some of his stories on four audio tapes and a CD which are marketed nationally, was a member of the cast in two movies, “A Time To Kill” and “As I lay Dying”, is a featured storyteller at numerous storytelling festivals, performs often as an after dinner speaker, formed SouthernStories.com, a company to publicize, promote and celebrate southern authors, artists, storytellers and musicians, and has been on the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Artist Roster. He is an avid outdoorsman who loves hunting and fishing.
He married (considerably above his station, according to him) Perry Thickens of Laurel, Mississippi, a professional artist who illustrates his books, and they have two children of their own and a foster son. Son Jim, a medical doctor retired from the U.S. Navy and currently on a two year mission in Kenya teaching Kenyan doctors, daughter Anne is a doctor of veterinary medicine and foster son Rick is a professional wrestler. Jim and Perry have twelve extra bright grandchildren.
